Case Study:  Rob Pettigrew – Commercial Property – Director

Rob joined Thursfields as a Director in 2017.  Having trained in the City with SJ Berwin, Rob joined Pinsent Masons as a Commercial Property solicitor.  During his 13 years there, Rob specialised in development work taking a lead role for high profile clients on major projects that included a number of new supermarkets for Waitrose, high tech development centres for Jaguar Land Rover and numerous regeneration projects for the Homes and Communities Agency that included the re-opening of Corby train station.  After 13 years, Rob was ready for a new challenge.

“Whilst at Pinsents I gained some fantastic experience that provided a platform from which I was fortunate enough to be offered a number of other opportunities both with other practices and also outside the legal world.  Some of them had appeal however I always knew it would have to be something really unique if it was to tempt me to make the move from a great firm where I was part of a top level team working for high profile clients on weighty transactions.  That unique offer came in early 2017.  Thursfields had opened an office in Solihull, where I live, and this provided an opportunity for me to play a leading role in developing Thursfields’ brand – to become the go-to law firm for both business and individuals in Solihull.”

“12 months on, I am delighted I made the move. Thursfields has a culture that offers genuine autonomy with accountability. With 150 colleagues, there is plenty of resource to call upon and collaboration across disciplines. Several of my colleagues have made a similar move from larger City firms to come to Thursfields. Client work is of a high quality and  I have the opportunity to do lots of business development. The team in Solihull has expanded rapidly in 12 months and I have enjoyed being part of the Firm’s growth journey.”

Case Study:  John McLean – Commercial Property – Senior Associate

Divorce lawyer staff

Having trained and worked at Eversheds in Birmingham for 11 years, John gained exposure to national and international clients.  He developed particular expertise in the utilities, telecoms and energy sectors.  Working in a large practice has many advantages but after he and his wife started a family, he sought a new challenge: one where he could experience more autonomy in his daily work and the opportunity to build his own network of clients and referrers of work.

“I joined Thursfields in 2016 and it has certainly lived up to my expectations.  I undertake a much broader spectrum of work which has been a refreshing challenge and I am still able to utilise my specialisms in telecoms and energy which I focussed on before. There is a strong team ethos but you need to have confidence in your own abilities, and a recognition that you are going to stand or fall to a large degree by your own efforts.

The autonomy for me is a huge positive – I am not a cog in a machine, and have the opportunity to get out and meet clients and build relationships.  If you understand that you won’t just sit at your desk and get work fed to you, then you will find Thursfields a huge opportunity.  It is very open to business development ideas/efforts; my own skill set is expanding all the time and my personal development improving as a result.  I have a new lease of life here, and new opportunities to get the most out of my career.”

Case Study – Tim Edwards – Corporate – Senior Associate

senior solicitor

Tim qualified in 2009 and worked for Williams and Soden and The Wilkes Partnership in Birmingham in the Corporate team.  His practice areas include mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance and restructuring, strategic alliances (including joint venture arrangements, investment agreements and shareholders’ agreements) and general corporate advice.

“I have really enjoyed my first year working at Thursfields. The firm’s dynamic yet friendly ethos makes it an enjoyable place to work. The quality of both corporate and commercial work which I have undertaken so far, is easily on a par with that which I experienced whilst working in Birmingham city centre.

Thursfields has experienced a period of rapid growth in recent years and its ambition and appetite for further growth makes it a really exciting place to be. I, for one, am looking forward to making a contribution to that growth journey and being an integral part of the firm’s future success.”
