Top Thursfields lawyer helping to run national event on financial side of vulnerable clients

One of the Midlands’ legal experts on Court of Protection issues is part of a national conference focused on the financial side of dealing with vulnerable clients.

Annabel Kay, who works in the Wills and Estates team at Thursfields Solicitors, is assisting at the event called ‘Deputy Day 2021: Whose Life Is It Anyway?’ in London this Thursday [4 November].

The event at 30 Euston Square has been organised by Frenkel Topping, a firm of expert financial advisers who help the legal sector achieve life-changing compensation for clients involved in personal injury and clinical negligence cases.

Annabel, head of Court of Protection and vulnerable client services at Thursfields, is one of the experts for break-out groups in a session called ‘Making the most of your time’.

She said: “A ‘deputy’ is appointed by the Court of Protection to make decisions on behalf of someone who lacks mental capacity and cannot always make decisions for themselves, often because they have had a serious brain injury or illness, have dementia or severe learning disabilities.

“I will be facilitating discussion on various court of protection matters on how deputies go about solving difficult issues, for example, can someone who lacks capacity marry, and how do deputies manage low funds?

“Professional deputies have to wear so many different hats while doing their work but never get paid for all of it.

“This session will provide guidance and experience on maximising recovery of costs, including the recovery of litigation costs, costs incurred for attending meetings and the recovery of time for preparing annual deputyship reports.”

Annabel is particularly skilled at deputyship work for clients who have lost mental capacity through trauma or clinical negligence and who have been awarded extensive damages.

She advises both adults and children clients wanting to make applications to the court on multiple issues ranging from statutory wills and recouping the deputy bond, to welfare orders and end of life hearings.
