Legal Musician guest lectures at Birmingham City University

Thursfields has been working in partnership with Birmingham City University to provide advice to students on its prestigious Music Industries Course.

Stuart Price, Solicitor, who heads up the Technology and Creative Industries team at Thursfields, gave a guest lecture to students on the legal pitfalls of working in the music industry sharing some of his experiences of acting for music industry clients over many years.  Stuart also speaks from personal experience as a musician himself. Focussing on copyright ownership and duration, collaborative working and image rights, the students were guided through the issues involved with a typical recording contract.

Course leader, Craig Hamilton, of Birmingham City University said “For our undergraduates a basic understanding of copyright law as it relates to the Music Industries is essential. Stuart’s guest lecture is the cornerstone of this understanding for our first year students. He provides a fantastic and concise overview of the key points around recorded music and contracts and this enables the students to move forward with their own entrepreneurial activity.”

Stuart Price said “Music law does not exist in isolation. An artist’s lawyers need to be well versed in contract law as well as intellectual property law and agency and distribution regulations. Simply knowing the law isn’t sufficient – understanding the commercial realities of working in the music industry is key. As both performer and lawyer, I understand how it works from both sides.”
