Thursfields Talk Legal: property auctions to be discussed at free webinar

The crucial things to remember if you’re considering buying a home via a property auction will be discussed at Thursfields Solicitors’ webinar next week.

Darren Cox, an associate solicitor in the Residential Conveyancing department, will host the free Talk Legal webinar at 10am on Wednesday 12 August.

Darren will introduce the webinar live on Zoom, will then play a short vidcast explaining the various types of property auctions and how to approach them, before returning to the screen to answer any questions.

The session is expected to last no longer than 30 minutes, including any questions, and attendees will leave knowing what they need to do before, during and after a property auction purchase.

Darren said: “We’ve all watched auctions on telly like ‘Homes Under the Hammer’ and when edited these transactions can seem both relatively easy and a bit scary at the same time.

“The important thing is that if you’re going to use a traditional property auction, you need to get everything ready beforehand, as once the auctioneer’s gavel or hammer comes down you have legally exchanged contracts there and then.

“We’ll go through all the homework you need to do, such as visiting the properties you’re thinking of bidding for, and arrange proper legal advice so you know what’s in the auction pack.

“We’ll also look at the ‘modern auction’, which is one that works a bit like eBay via an estate agent’s website, as that is entirely different to the traditional auction where bidders are in the auction room.

“With COVID-19 social distancing restrictions still in place, we’ll also look at how the traditional auction is currently taking place remotely online.

“That still abides by the same principles as a physical auction, albeit with bidders only virtually in the room, and so it remains very different to a modern auction.”

Darren added: “There are some tremendous deals to be had at property auctions, and they’re not at all as scary as they can look like on telly.

“But buyers need to know what to do before, during and after the auction day, and this seminar will equip them with everything they need to know to start the process.”

The 12 August webinar is the fifth in Thursfields’ Talk Legal series which was launched during the COVID-19 lockdown to ensure the company continued its regular free workshops for businesses and the community.

Nick O’Hara, managing director at Thursfields, said: “Our expanding series of vidcasts on different legal topics have quickly become a popular resource, and we look forward to welcoming more viewers next week.”
